Awards at Swancon 2003

In a record haul for a non-WorldCon in Australia, the awards presented at last night's Ceremony at the 2003 Australian National SF Convention—Perth's Swancon 2003—included the Ditmars, the Peter McNamara Award, the A. Bertram Chandler Award and two sets of Tin Ducks.

The 2003 Australian National SF ("Ditmar") Award:

BEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT:
Jonathan Strahan

BEST FAN ACHIEVEMENT:
Borderlands: That which scares us..., ed. Simon Oxwell, Grant Watson and Anna Hepworth

The William Atheling Jr. Award for Criticism or Review was won by Jonathan Strahan.

The Australian Science Fiction Foundation's A. Bertram Chandler Award, given for services to and achievements in the genre in Australia, was presented to Lucy Sussex—coincidentally by her partner Julian Warner. The Peter McNamara Award ("The Mac"), similarly presented for significant and ongoing achievement in Australian SF, was awarded to Stephanie Smith, Senior Editor for HarperCollins Australia's Voyager imprint.

Two sets of "Tin Duck" Awards for achievements in SF by Western Australians—the 2003 Awards and the trophies for the 2002 Awards—were presented at the ceremony.

The smoothly-run Ceremony held in the main ballroom of the Kings Perth Hotel also included the awarding of Art Show prizes and the presentation by WASFF of commemorative badges to four members who each had attended at least 20 Swancons.
